About Us

helpwildlife.co.uk provides advice on what to do if you find a sick, injured or abandoned wild bird or animal

HelpWildlife.co.uk began in 2005 when founder Sarah became tired of witnessing a distressing amount of misinformation about how to help wildlife casualties on internet forums and social media. Sarah felt there was a need for articles about when and how to help based on experience and a lack of bias. She gathered all the wildlife rescues she knew about into a single page list for easy reference to help with directing casualty finders to help as quickly as possible.

The homepage in 2006

The site has developed enormously since then and that single page list is now a directory of over 600 wildlife rescues across the UK. The site is visited by around a quarter of a million people a year and used by organisations such as St Tiggywinkles and the RSPB to help those contacting them to find help.

But it’s still mostly just Sarah and a handful of helpers and we’d really like your help. Whether you’re a wildlife rescuer or just someone who believes in what we’re trying to do, we’d love you to get involved.

Helpwildlife.co.uk is part of the Starlight Trust, the charity founded by Sarah and her husband, Dave. You can find out more about the work of the trust at starlighttrust.org.uk

Some frequently asked questions

Can you come and rescue this animal from my garden?

No, we operate online only. We can offer advice and help to connect you with a wildlife rescue in your area. See here for more.

Would you like some towels/newspaper/mascara wands/cages/food?

Thank you but, as above, we operate online only so we have no use for items used to care for animals. Please put your location into our map to find a wildlife rescue in your area and use the information on their listing to contact them and offer your donations.

Do you have any jobs? Can I do work experience with you? Can you come and do a talk for my school/scout group etc?

We are run entirely by volunteers from their homes so we have no jobs and cannot accommodate work experience placements. We do not have the resources to do talks and visits at this time. Please put your location into our map to find a wildlife rescue in your area and use the information on their listing to contact them to see if they can help.

Do you need any volunteers?

We do, but please be aware this will be with online, computer based work NOT animal care. If you’re looking to volunteer directly with animals, please put your location into our map to find a wildlife rescue in your area and use the information on their listing to contact them and offer your help. To volunteer with us, visit helpwildlife.co.uk/get-involved.

How do I add a rescue to the directory or change information about my rescue in the directory?

If you are a rescue and wish to add/edit/remove a listing from our directory go to helpwildlife.co.uk/rescue-area/guidance-for-rescues
